Comments for Sunshine and Moonlight -- A Journey with Multiple Sclerosis

Everyone has Sunshine and Moonlight in their lives. It's just that my Sunshine and Moonlight has come in the form of Multiple Sclerosis. So, why the name "Sunshine and Moonlight"? When I was diagnosed, I was amazed by the negative terms that were tossed around --bad days, MS days, remission, relapses, episodes, disease progression. All scary. All negative. I've chosen to focus on the positive instead, as I search to find the "new normal" in my life. "Sunshine" -- represents my post MS-diagnosis day-to-day life. And, "Moonlight" -- represents everything else. As a cancer survivor since 1997 and a Person with M.S. since 2007, I consider myself to be a Patient-Educator, here to help others newly diagnosed and those continuing their battles with M.S. And, this, my friends, brings us to "Sunshine and Moonlight -- A Journey with Multiple Sclerosis." Welcome!

Kim (and everyone),

I accidentally neglected to include an important section in my CCSVI post.

THE RISKS: Dr. Dake at Stanford is learning as he goes, so the early large, stiff stents have been replaced with smaller (in diameter), flexible stents. Some problems (anecdotally reported) are damage to the Accessory Nerve which shares the same sheath as the jugular vein -- the Accessory Nerve provides for shoulder movement; hopefully, the damage is just temporary.

There is significant bruising on the body because of the required blood thinners that must be taken. There can be high levels of pain during and after the procedure with a long recovery time (> than two mos).

There can be internal bleeding if the vein becomes nicked by the catheter resulting in a variety of problems depending on exactly where the nick occurs.

This is surgery and as with all surgery, there can be risks.

I heard someone laugh yesterday and I was immediately transported to high school a kazillion years ago - and a friend who had that same contagious laugh - Cathy Oberste. It got me feeling nostalgic and I thought I'd google this funny, gorgeous gal to see where she might be these days, some 30+ years later. Devastation. There is the obit in the Norman paper for Sept. 08. All the fantastic things I remember about Cathy are reiterated in the beautiful words of the blogs I found. She was a bright spot in everyone's day - so delightful. I still snort and laugh just remembering some of the crap she would pull. I'm a little late getting this in, but my heart reaches for her family and I hope they know her impact is still felt.

Love out to you! Kathleen (Kathy Jefferson)

Hi Folks!

Nice place you have here.

I was recently diagnosed with RR MS. and have been looking all over the web at different MS sites.

Out of all of them, this one contains useful information about the disease as well as tastefully selected "other" info. within.

For statistically minded folks, I am a 43 year old white male. Married, no children. Diagnosed May 2009. Treating with Copaxone as well as other non-specific medications suggested by my Neurologist.

Oops! before I forget, is there any "official" membership or sign-up here? If there is, I missed it.

Thanks,
Glenn
